  1. Some words about the author of the story.
  2. In what way does the story begin? In the reader’s interest awakened at once? If so, how does the author achieve it.
  3. From whose point of view is the story told?
  4. Is the plot an important feature of this story or is it of minor importance? Outline the plot. Which passage do you consider to be the climax of the story?
  5. Does the story end as the reader expects?
  6. Is the title appropriate? Does it reflect the plot of the story or just one of its minor aspects?
  7. Which method of portraying characters does the author employ: direct or indirect?
  8. What is the author’s attitude to main character? In which lines of the story do we feel it most?
  9. What words and expressions does the author use to describe human relations; to describe a character, to describe human appearance?
  10. Which items of the story bear touches of irony (sadness, sympathy with)?
  11. Find in the text examples of similes metaphors, epithets. Comment on their use.
  12. Is it typical of N’s prose?
  13. To sum it all up, do you like (dislike) the story. Give your reasons.
